Reports show that safety switches are important as they protect people from being electrocuted and getting seriously injured from electric shock. They work by quickly breaking an electrical circuit in case there is a fault, similarly to when a person touches a live wire whilst also touching the ground. An electric current of around 30 milliamperes or 0.03 amperes through the human body can potentially cause cardiac arrest or serious injury if it persists for more than a small fraction of a second. RCDs trip or disconnect the wires from the electric power fast enough to prevent serious injury.
It is important to test safety switches to ensure that they are operating at an optimal state. A multifunction tester can be used for this purpose. It works by applying a controlled fault current from live to earth and measuring the operating time of the safety switch. This test can be done right after installation of the device. Thus, homeowners may want to take note of this when they are having their electrical system installed. To avoid unnecessary tripping, only one safety switch should be installed on any single circuit. It is possible that the safety switch may trip even if the residual current flowing is less than its rated residual operating current. This is known as ‘nuisance tripping’ and it may have a number of causes, such as a current surge or voltage surge, or noise on the installation. It may also be that an appliance connected to the system is causing it to trip, especially those that have heating elements.
One way to check if an appliance is causing the so called ‘nuisance tripping’ is to disconnect all appliances from the electrical system. This can be done by switching off all of the circuit breakers for the various appliances and circuits that are connected to the tripped safety switch. Then, the safety switch is reset by flipping it back on. Each circuit breaker is then turned on one by one. When the safety switch trips, it is the appliance that is connected to that specific circuit breaker that may be the cause of the trip. If possible, it is recommended to disconnect the appliance from the system. Alternatively, its circuit breaker should be kept in the off position. At this point a call to a professional electrician needs to be made to rectify the problem.
