Safety switches are vital in protecting persons against electrocution and potential loss of life. Safety switches are mandatory on light and power circuits and are easily fitted to existing installations.

Safety switches, or Residual Current Devices (RCDs) are designed to detect an imbalance in current caused by a fault to earth and automatically reacts by disconnecting the power. RCDs are intended to operate within 25-40 milliseconds reacting quick enough to prevent an electric shock occurring.

According to the Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000:2007) for a domestic electrical installation that has more than one final sub-circuit, a minimum of two Residual Current Devices (RCDs) shall be installed. RCDs are not required for circuits supplying fixed appliances, such as hot water systems and stoves.

All homes and businesses should be fitted with RCD’s as they have significantly reduced the number of injuries and deaths caused by electrocutions.
