In short

Ambient Electrical carries out electrical safety inspections of homes and workplaces in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, for buyers, sellers, landlords and anyone unsure about an older installation. The inspection goes past a look at the switchboard: it tests circuit polarity, conductor continuity, cable insulation, earthing and bonding, and every safety switch. The NSW Government says 40% of house fires in NSW each year are caused by electrical faults and electrical appliances.

What an electrical inspection checks

An Electrical inspection is more than a visual inspection of the switchboard. It involves the testing and inspecting of:

  • Polarity of each circuit
  • Continuity of conductors within circuits
  • Insulation Resistance of its cable
  • Condition of the Switchboard and its apparatus
  • Inspecting and Testing the switchboard for proper earth grounding, bonding, and integrity of all connections.
  • Check for the presence of a driven ground/earth rod, the labelling and the integrity of the connection.
  • Inspect and Test all Residual Current Devices and any other protection device such as Circuit Breakers and Surge Protection Devices.
  • Check critical areas for potential corrosion which may result from improper connections or the use of dissimilar metals.

Consider a home electrical inspection if you are:

  • Buying a property
  • Selling a property
  • Renting or renting out a property
  • Or you suspect that your switchboard does not meet Regulations, or you just want peace of mind knowing that your Electrical Installation is safe and hazard free

If an inspection finds old rubber- or cloth-insulated cable, house rewiring explains the options, from replacing a few circuits to the whole installation.

What a customer says about this work

Peter was engaged by NRMA insurance to inspect and report on our floor heating claim as i had made an appeal against the previous findings.
He was very thorough and professional and far more experienced and knowledgeable than the previous trades that NRMA had sent to inspect our property.
Peter was very detailed and systematic when approaching this job but he was also very personable and helpful when it came to discussing it and explaining things to us.
I would thoroughly recommend Peter and Ambient Electrical to anyone who is in need of an electrical contractor.

Electrical inspections: common questions

What does an electrical inspection check?

An electrical inspection is more than a look at the switchboard. It tests the polarity of each circuit, continuity of conductors, cable insulation resistance, the condition of the switchboard, earthing, bonding and the integrity of connections, the earth rod and its labelling, and it tests the safety switches (RCDs).

When should I get an electrical inspection?

An electrical inspection makes sense when you are buying, selling or renting a property, when you rent one out, if you suspect the switchboard does not meet current requirements, or simply for peace of mind that the installation is safe and free of hazards.

Does an electrical inspection come with a compliance certificate?

A CCEW covers work that installs, repairs, adds or alters electrical equipment, so it applies to any repairs that follow the inspection rather than to the testing itself.

What does an electrical safety check cost?

The cost of an electrical safety check depends on the size of the property, the number of circuits and safety switches to test, and how easy the switchboard and wiring are to reach. Any repairs the inspection finds are quoted separately, before they are done.
