In short

Ambient Electrical does light switch installation, replacement, relocation and repair in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, including two-way switching from two places. The standard Clipsal and HPM ranges are stocked, and other brands or architectural ranges can be ordered in. A switch that buzzes, feels warm or gives even a slight shock has a fault and should not be used until it has been checked.

Ambient Electrical repairs, relocates and upgrades light switches to suit how you use each room.

Light switch replacement

Old or worn switches can be replaced with the standard Clipsal and HPM ranges, which are stocked, or with designer ranges ordered in. Moving a switch, or adding a second switch so a light can be controlled from two places, is done at the same time.

The leading brands, Clipsal, Hager, and HPM/Legrand have a wide range of Switches from the Standard Range to Architecturally Designed. Becoming popular is the trend to toward Home Automation and the convenience in which it offers. Ambient Electrical specialises in Clipsal.

Peter can explain what a Clipsal C-Bus automation system involves and costs to run in a home or business, and suggest more affordable options that keep a contemporary look.

Please Note: We stock the standard HPM and Clipsal range but we will advise and order other products on request.

What customers say about this work

Peter did a great job replacing my down lights and a few switches. He was punctual, friendly and professional. Plus he did the work for a fair price. I would recommend him to anyone in the Bondi area. Daniel

Peter carried out some work while I was having my unit renovated and he did a fantastic job. Replacing light fightings, installing new electrical outlets and changing all switches - I am really happy with his quality of work. Plus he's a great guy who I would highly recommend!

Switches: common questions

Can light switches be moved or replaced?

Ambient repairs, relocates and replaces light switches, including two-way switching, and stocks the standard Clipsal and HPM ranges. Other brands and architectural ranges can be ordered on request. In NSW, changing a light switch yourself is not allowed: it is a job for a licensed electrician.

Why has my light switch stopped working?

A light switch that has stopped working usually has a worn mechanism or a loose connection behind the plate. If the light and globe are fine and the circuit breaker or safety switch has not tripped, the switch needs testing and replacing by a licensed electrician.

Why does my light switch buzz?

A buzzing light switch usually points to a dimmer that does not suit the lights it controls, or to a loose connection. A buzz with heat, a burning smell or flickering means the switch should be turned off and checked.

Why does my light switch get hot?

A dimmer can feel slightly warm in normal use, but an ordinary light switch that gets hot has a loose or overloaded connection. Stop using it and have it checked, because loose connections are how switches and power points overheat.

Why did my light switch give me a shock?

A shock or tingle from a light switch means something is wrong: a damaged switch, exposed wiring or an earth fault. Treat it as an electrical emergency, do not use the switch, turn off that circuit at the switchboard if it is safe, and call a licensed electrician.

Can my switches be automated?

Home automation systems such as Clipsal C-Bus let you control lighting and more from one place. Ambient can explain what is involved and suggest more affordable options where full automation is more than you need.

What does it cost to replace a light switch?

The cost of replacing a light switch depends on the type of switch, whether it is being moved or only replaced, whether two-way switching is added, and how many switches are done in one visit. Peter gives you a clear quote before any work starts.
