Swapping old halogen downlights for LED
Light emitting diode (LED) lighting has replaced incandescent, fluorescent and halogen lighting as the better long-term choice. According to energy.gov.au, LEDs use about 75% less energy than halogen light bulbs and last 5 to 10 times longer, which cuts replacement costs and means fewer globes to change in hard-to-reach places like atriums and stairwells. Retrofitting LED downlights usually means replacing the halogen fitting and its transformer, not just the globe: an LED on an old halogen transformer, or on a dimmer made for halogen, can flicker or buzz. A matched LED driver and an LED-rated dimmer fix that.
LEDs emit light in one direction, which reduces the need for reflectors and diffusers. They also give off far less ultra-violet and infra-red light than older globes, which matters when planning a lighting layout for artwork, expensive wallpaper or gallery walls, and they run much cooler than halogen and incandescent globes.
