In short

Ambient Electrical does electric hot water repairs in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, finding and fixing electrical faults such as a failed element or thermostat, and connecting new electric hot water systems. The electrical side is licensed electrical work; the water connections on a replacement are work for a licensed plumber. Peter quotes before any work starts.

When an electric hot water system runs cold or only lukewarm, the cause can be electrical: a failed heating element, a faulty thermostat, a safety switch or circuit breaker that has tripped, or a fault in the circuit that feeds the heater. Testing the circuit and the heater's electrical parts shows which it is, and whether the system is worth repairing.

Replacing an electric hot water system

A replacement usually involves two trades. The water connections are plumbing work. The electrical connection is electrical work, and in NSW even a like-for-like water heater replacement is certified with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. A plumber may disconnect and reconnect a hard-wired water heater only if their licence carries the hot water heater endorsement, and that covers reconnecting it, not new wiring.

A new circuit, or a larger one for a bigger system, is work for a licensed electrician. If the new heater draws more than the old one, the circuit and the switchboard it runs from are checked first, the same way as for an induction cooktop.

Hot water: common questions

Why has my electric hot water gone cold?

An electric hot water system that has gone cold can have a failed element or thermostat, a tripped safety switch or circuit breaker, or a fault in the circuit that feeds it. If its breaker has tripped and trips again when reset, leave it off and call an electrician.

Can a plumber connect an electric hot water system?

A plumber can disconnect and reconnect a hard-wired electric water heater in NSW only if their plumbing licence or certificate carries the hot water heater endorsement. Any new or altered wiring is electrical work for a licensed electrician.

Do I get a compliance certificate when a hot water system is replaced?

A like-for-like electric water heater replacement still needs a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) in NSW, lodged by the licensed electrician, and the eCert portal sends you a copy.

What does an electric hot water repair cost?

The cost of an electric hot water repair depends on which part has failed, whether the system is old enough that replacing it makes more sense, and whether the circuit needs work. Peter tells you what he finds and quotes before any work starts.
