Home wallbox chargers, with the switchboard and supply checked first.
In short
Ambient Electrical does EV charger installation in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, fitting wall-mounted home chargers and checking the switchboard and supply before the charger goes in. In NSW a licensed electrical contractor has to do the work, and Ausgrid's approval is needed where the supply to the home has to be upgraded. Peter quotes before any work starts.
A level 1 charger plugs into an ordinary power point and charges slowly. A level 2 charger is a wall-mounted unit, often called a wallbox, on its own circuit, and it charges faster. For a wallbox, the NSW Government's advice is to get quotes from licensed electricians with EV charger experience, and to use only chargers that carry the Regulatory Compliance Mark.
A wallbox adds a large load that can run for hours at a time, so the switchboard's spare capacity, the main supply and the cable route to the car space are checked first. Ausgrid notes that a home over 20 years old that has not been rewired may need its meter upgraded, and that its approval is needed where the electrician finds the supply has to be upgraded. Your electricity retailer handles any change to the meter or tariff.
If the switchboard has no room for another circuit, or still runs on ceramic fuses, it is upgraded before the charger is connected. Older wiring found along the way is covered on the house rewiring page.
Strata buildings have to follow the Strata Schemes Management Act, and the NSW Government says renters in apartments need strata approval to install a level 2 wallbox. Ausgrid suggests strata buildings have an electrical contractor recommend the options for the building, since the building's supply is shared. More on strata electrical work.

A wall-mounted EV charger has to be installed by a licensed electrician in NSW: Ausgrid says all electrical work inside a customer's property must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor. A level 1 charger that plugs into an existing power point needs no installation, but it charges more slowly.

Ausgrid's approval is needed where the electrician finds that the supply to the home has to be upgraded, and depending on the installation you may need to notify Ausgrid before it goes in. The electrician can tell you whether a connection application is needed.

An EV charger in an apartment car space usually needs strata approval first: the NSW Government says renters in apartments need strata approval to install a level 2 wallbox, and strata buildings must follow the Strata Schemes Management Act.

The cost of EV charger installation depends on the charger you choose, the distance from the switchboard to the car space, whether the switchboard has room for a new circuit, and whether the supply needs upgrading. Peter gives you a clear quote before any work starts.
