A safety switch (RCD) trips when it detects electricity leaking to earth, usually through a faulty appliance, water in an outdoor fitting or damaged wiring. Unplug everything on the tripped circuit, reset the switch once, then plug things back in one at a time to find the culprit. Treat it as urgent. Stop using the power point or light, switch it off, and if it is safe, turn off that circuit or the main switch at the switchboard. If there is smoke, flame or heat you can feel through the wall, get out and call 000. A burning, melting-plastic or fishy smell usually means a connection is overheating, and it needs a licensed electrician before that circuit is used again.

First plug in something you know works, and check the power point's own switch is on. If it is still dead, look at the switchboard: a tripped safety switch or circuit breaker often cuts a group of power points while the lights stay on, because lights and power are on separate circuits. One flickering light is usually the globe, a loose globe, or an LED that does not suit the dimmer or transformer it is on. Flickering in one room points to that circuit or a failing switch. An Ausgrid defect notice means an inspection found something at your connection to the network that is unsafe or non-compliant. Where there is no immediate danger, you normally have 21 days to fix it. Most defects are at the point of attachment, the service mains or the meter panel, which only an ASP Level 2 electrician is authorised to work on. Most older pool lights are halogen. LED replacements use less power, last far longer and can change colour from a remote or wireless controller. Pool lights run at extra-low voltage through a transformer, which often needs checking or changing too. Depending on the fitting, it may be possible to replace the light without draining the pool.
